For the Love of King

CD covers for the King Records Revival project

Concept

While working for the Bootsy Collins Foundation, my team’s big project was to design the packaging for a CD series meant as a fundraiser to restore the historic King Records building in Cincinnati, Ohio. I designed the cover art for two of these: The Joy of Jazz, and Jammin’ to Jazz. As a team we had decided the covers in this series would each feature a musician and their instrument for their respective genres. The first CD in this series, Freedom of Funk, created by Josie Roe determined the illustrative style for this series.

Sketches

While I working within the original style, I began sketches which strived to create dynamic and expressive poses.

Digital Illustration

After choosing a pose, I created an outlined image in Adobe Illustrator, then filled it with simple colors. I then added refinements, texture, shadows, typography, and small details.
